The winds of change may be blowing in the windy city, as it’s becoming increasingly difficult to ignore that Chicago has a major crime problem. It seems that for all former President Obama’s community organizing, the community is still in shambles.
The spike in crime rates, even just in this year has been a severe increase to an already crime-ridden city.
Via Daily Caller:
“At least 31 people were shot and five of those victims were killed in Chicago this weekend as of Sunday afternoon.
The shooting spree in the city continues unabated with 26 wounded so far and five killed, according to a report in the Chicago Sun Times.
This weekend’s shootings bring the city’s toll so far this year to 973 people shot and 168 fatalities.
Another victim was a 24-year-old male who was shot in the groin and his condition was stabilized. Police indicated he was a known gang member.
Early Sunday afternoon, a 30-year-old man was shot and killed in the South Side Washington Park neighborhood. That man was sitting in a car when another vehicle pulled up beside his car and someone fired shots. He was shot in the left cheek, hip and other parts of his body. He was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.
Last week after a violent Easter weekend, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel ran with police recruits to promote a reduction in violence, according to local WGNTV.
‘He did it to showcase Chicago’s effort to reduce gun violence by putting more patrol officers on the city’s streets. Emanuel expects to add about 1,000 new officers to the rolls within the next couple of years. He believes a more visible police presence will put a damper on violent crime,’ WGNTV reported.
The local news station also reported that the mayor ‘said the police department has already taken a new step by cracking down on guns and drugs on the city’s many party buses.’
The latest shooting victims were not on party buses but were on streets and walking in parks, while one 51-year-old man was just doing his job delivering food.”
The Mayor has vowed to do something about the growing crime problem in Chicago, but I’m not sure his solutions will do any good. The mayor has always been a huge proponent of strict gun laws. This guy seems to think that if we just make it more illegal to have guns, the people who are already breaking the law will just throw up their hands and quit committing crimes because it’ll be too difficult. The idea being that if guns are even less available that crime rates will drop.
Let me tell you the tale of two cities. No, not those cities, of Chicago, IL and Houston, TX a few years ago.
Both cities have a combined Hispanic and African-American population of almost 70% and both have huge illegal immigration problems. And yet one of them has over 38 homicides per 100k people, per year and the other has less than 10. I’m not sure what the justification might be for these types of results.
I guess Rahm Emanuel thinks that this is how criminals think:
I’m sure nobody will even be allowed to suggest that this is because Chicago is one of the stubbornest sanctuary cities in the nation. No doubt it’ll be totally taboo to mention that it’s catch and release for those who are illegal just for taking up residence in their city and that the gangs are literally just migrating north and taking over the city.
Chicago has got to come to grips with the fact that they’re going to continue to be pushed around if they don’t start pushing back. The gang violence and general degradation of human nature will continue to plague the city until it is forcibly put to a stop. When there are groups of people who think “might make right” they will run over those around them and kill whoever they want in order to get what they want. They can do their rehabilitation and release, crossing their fingers and hoping it took, or they can let the fear and natural self-preservation instinct of the criminals kick in and stop some of this crime at the source.
I agree with the mayor Emanuel this is a gun problem; there aren’t enough of them.
